K-ON! Review

Do you like music?

Do you like anime?

If you answered yes to both of the above questions than boy do I have a show for you!

Alright, So K-ON! is the Japanese word for “Light Music Club” and that is exactly what this series is about. Most of the time it revolves around 4 high school students that all choose to join the light music club. There is Mugi on keyboard, Mio on bass, Ritsu on drums and Yui our main character on the guitar!

They all join the light music club to save it from being abolished and soon enough they are all great friends jamming some tunes, Problem is Yui cant play a musical instrument. The club begs Yui to stay and after some sweets and tea, she agrees.

The club then gets a teacher supervisor and she is a mentally broken down lady obsessed with the sole task of dressing the girls in different costumes. They also get part time jobs together and buy Yui a guitar, turns out Mugi-chan’s father owns the music shop and Yui gets the guitar that she has her eyes set on. The light music club then gives their sensational group of instruments a name, and after some bickering (and tea of course) they decide upon the name After-School Tea Time!!!

This is such a FUN Show, it made me laugh on so many occasions and the general feel of this anime is so laid-back. This is the kind of series’ that you just enjoy with some friends and popcorn! The animation is absolutely sensational and vibrant, The plot line is so feel-good and it actually has a very satisfying ending. The Music, do not even get me started on the music it so indescribably awesome!! The closing song is so catchy that I have gone back over and over again just to watch it!

K-ON! Is a thirteen episode series’ and it has some OVA’s at the end as well, Its a short, sweet and lovable show. Cant get enough of K-ON! well either can I and we are both in luck, The second series’ was announced in Japan not too long ago! So go flippin’ watch this series.

Full Metal Alchemist Review

I have been wanting to review Full Metal Alchemist (FMA) for quite a while as it is the series that truly got me into anime!

FMA is a 51 episode series developed by studio Bones, Its currently very popular and definitely left its mark on the main stream western audiences.  Fma follows the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric,  in their journey to obtain a powerful stone that has the ability to fix their bodies. You see in a failed attempt to bring back their mother to life with alchemy Alphonse lost his body and Edward lost a leg and arm. Using a scientific technique known as alchemy Edward is able to bind Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor while Edward uses false limbs called Automail. So after this very traumatic experience Edward and Alphonse are off on an alchemy filled journey to get a hold of the Philosophers stone which is rumored to give the wielder great power in their alchemy.

The Plot line in Fma takes very significant twists and turns throughout the story and the brothers are often finding more challenges they must face. The animation itself is fantastic, the colors are very strong and the images very smooth. Voice acting in both the Japanese and English version is absolutely amazing, in fact the English version is probably one of the best dub’s I have ever listened to.

The great thing about Full Metal Alchemist is that even though there is plenty of twists and turns you never feel that the story is moving to fast, you never have to stop and think over what has just happened. The only real problem I had with Fma is that the story was completely different to the manga, the original manga developed in a much cleaner way. I was not the only person that thought the anime deserved to stay true to the manga and so studio bones being as fantastic as they are released “Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood”! Brotherhood is a complete makeover of Fma but this time stays closer to the original roots of the manga.

Full Metal Alchemist is a fantastic series’ that is absolutely worth the watch! Even though its a hefty 51 Episodes at the end of it all it feels like you’ve gone on a long life changing adventure.

Fma has been licensed and released on DVD by funimation along with the feature length movie “Full Metal Alchemist: Conquerer of Shambala” so be sure to check them out.

Shakugan No Shana Review

Shakugan No Shana (Often shortened to shana) Is a series that I watched early last year and when I found out that some of my friends had gotten into the series, it was a good enough reason to review the series.

Shakugan No Shana is a story about a boy named Yuji Sakai and his eye opening experience to the real world. It starts when Yuji finds out he is dead (Woah! Didn’t see that coming….seriously, I didnt) and that in rather a short time he will vanish and all memories of him will disappear as well. Following this he becomes an acquaintance to the Flame haired red hot eyed hunter, and she is a flame haze. Flame Haze is a name given to those that protects the balance of the world or something along those lines and basically throughout the series more different magical terms and beings are introduced to you. Yuji then gives the name shana to the flame haze and over time they begin to become friends and go through numerous battles.

Shana combines the slice of life genre with your action/adventure genre so well that the action fans don’t even realize they’re watching those parts of confession and romance. Although we have seen this method done before (Mai Hime etc.) it still feels original in its own way and you don’t really get sick of it.

Although shana was a good series I cannot say it was great, at times it left me wondering where the plot line had gone and if we were going to find it. I also noticed that it was rather anti-climatic, the finale really only goes for a few episodes and I felt like I could have watched only the last 5 episodes and still understood most of the plot.

Now I have only seen the first season and because of that obviously this review is only on the first season. Following the first series there is a movie, ova, “Shakugan no shana second” and currently airing in japan is “Shakugan no shana S” .

So for those looking for a fairly decent series with solid character development and good animation Shakugan no Shana is probably for you, But if your a hardcore Otaku and you don’t enjoy anime that is unnecessarily complicated then maybe you can give Shana a miss.

Oh by the way, Did I mention that there are some siblings that are constantly making out!?!

All for now

FLCL Review

There aren’t that many words you can use to really descripe FLCL (Furi Kuri, Fooly Cooly). It is definitely one of the more original series’ out there.

FLCL

Honestly when I first watched FLCL I really wandered what the hell I had gotten myself into. It was just so different to anything I had seen before, The animation alone sets itself apart from others. Ohk now for those unaware FLCL Is a six part OVA (Original Video Animation) and it follows the story of s 12 year old boy by the name of Naoto. And the plotline goes something like this, There is a town with a giant Steam Iron in the middle of it and Naoto’s older brother’s Girlfriend starts flirting with him and then a girl on a scooter hits Naoto on his head with a guitar. The hit to the head causes Naoto to get a lump on his head that starts growing and then robots start coming out of it.

O_o

Now I understand you must be rather confused at this point of time, and you should be confused but in a good way. Even though the plot line sounds rather strange there, and dont get me wrong it is very strange, but that was just a vague overview and the series does make more sense. I might add that FLCL’s art and music is exceptional and that is really what it is remembered for, FLCL introduced a new art form that changed the way a lot of people see anime now. As I said FLCL was also very well known for its soundtrack as it featured the closing theme for the series “Ride on a shooting star” by The Pillows.

Therefore the series although strange, is a definite must for all true otaku’s and all those looking for a rather interesting yet fun series. Now I reviewed this series not only because its worth reviewing but also for the fact that Funimation recently made a statement that FLCL will be re-bundled on Blu-Ray! Thats right, looks like blu-ray is quickly becoming the future of entertainment for us anime folk and the rest of the modern world :P.

Thats all for now.

-Cheers.

Death Note Review

Ohk,  Now anybody that knows anything at all about anime has heard of deathnote,  It has a ridiculously large fan base most of them being diehard L fan girls >< .

Haha, Anyway so although I watched Death Note about 2 years ago I thought it might be a good idea to review such a big series to get this newly anime dedicated blog rolling.

Death Note is a 37 episode series and as any well known shonen series it started in Shonen Jump’s weekly magazine as the manga written by Tsugumi Ohba. The series focuses around a Super Natural notebook found by a young university student by the name of Light Yagami, the notebook was dropped by a shinigami looking for some entertainment.

Lights father happens to be the chief of police and thats where light gets his firm sense of justice from and he hates the world that is now filled with crime. Light opens the notebook and finds out that it has the ability to kill anyone that is written on its pages, But of course there is a set of rules that helps the series advance in plot and create a few interesting twists.

Light starts killing the criminals with the extreme power that he now posses’s but along comes a world famous really rich and rather weird detective. His name is unknown to most and goes by the alias of L and his mission is to track down Light and make him pay for killing all the criminals.

Did I happen to mention that both of them are genius’s that come up with very precise plans to out do the other in the on-going game of cat and mouse. Death Note is different from most other shonen series because there is practically no fighting action, Its got a plot line that lures you in with its very intriguing mysteries.

Death Note all though some may some is over rated is definitely a series that is worth checking out, even for people that only like the more action type anime its still worth a look. There is a midway point that takes the series on a rather sharp turn and the plot develops rather well from that point on.

Funimation has made a rather bearable dub for all the animaniac’s that enjoy getting their dose of anime in english and 3 live action movies are released. Therefore if I were you I would go buy the series or if your broke at least go rent it out.

Light and L

Kampfer & Railgun!

Super Powered!, Super Sexy!, and Gender changing!?

Alright so lately Ive been watching a lot of Autumn anime, This is the stuff thats only recently been released in japan!  I would like to share 2 different anime’s with you in this post. The first being my favorite, Kampfer.

Kampfer is a strange name for an anime these days, but dont let the german put you off this fantastic series!

The story follows Natsuru Senō your average male protagonist, A nice guy that happens to have a magical bracelet that turns him into a kampfer! A kampfer is an alternate form that somebody can take on with the power of the magical bracelet, It gives the owner super powers, a different body, and can even change the personality of the owner. There is one slight problem that Natsuru faces though, Every kampfer is female! This in short means that whenever he turns into his Kampfer, he also turns into a chick! That of course cant be all of the plot line, There are also 2 teams of Kampfer’s and they have to fight whenever they come across each other so he joins forces with another Kampfer on his team. Add to that the fact that he also has a crush on a girl called Kaede Sakura but she is a lesbian and has fallen in love with Natsuru’s kampfer and not his male form!

The story so far is looking promising, And I can recommend you guys to check it out!

The Kampfer Girls!

Now for the other series, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun.

Its set in a city that has a population of 2.3 million people and 80% of them being students, Majority of those students are active in the “Brain development program”. All the students in the BDP are ESP’s and have super natural abilities. There are 5 levels of ESP ability, 0 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. Among the  2.3 million population there are seven level 5 ESP’s, One of them being our protagonist Mikoto. Mikoto has the ability to flip a coin and use it as a “Railgun” or basically a massive beam, Its extremely powerful and extremely awesome!

Based on first episode impressions this series has also got some potential, As long as it doesn’t drag on (which is rare for a 12 ep series) it should be awesome!
